The grand glass chandelier that hangs above the cozy sofas in the lobby is what catches the attention the most.
It’s huge and almost looming, even though it’s made of fragile glass elements lit from within, that form a conical shape with its tip facing the floor.
The more you look at it, the more it fascinates – even more so when you think from where the chandelier came: designed by the Italian designer Carlo Scarpa for the art-glass manufacturer Venini, it used to hang in Antwerp’s former Provincial Government Building, now located elsewhere. At the time of the move, Fosbury & Sons could acquire this stunning and unique piece at auction.
Scarpa’s work for Venini has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York – so the presence of this chandelier in Fosbury & Sons’ Antwerp lobby, is truly remarkable, seeing as the architect worked mainly in the Veneto area of Italy.
His buildings, landscapes and glasswork have a sensuous quality that works with the material at hand and is sensitive to the changes of time – whether seasonal or historical. For his work at Venini, he collaborated with Venetian glassblowers to get the craft just right.
Fosbury & Sons was lucky to find yet another chandelier of Scarpa’s design, which hangs in the Boitsfort location in Brussels.
