Filmscreening "Harry Seidler: Modernist" Biennale Brussels

In October 2020, the fourth Brussels Biennale of Modern Architecture opens the doors of some remarkable buildings from the period 1918-1972: houses, churches and office buildings. Interior tours, film screenings and a debate offer you insights into our modernist heritage.

During this Brussels Biennale of Modern Architecture, we are happy to invite you to this film screening about Harry Seidler.

Harry Seidler was an Austrian-born Australian architect who is considered to be one of the leading exponents of Modernism's methodology in Australia and the first architect to fully express the principles of the Bauhaus in Australia.

Movie: "Harry Seidler: Modernist"

Vienna-born Harry Seidler (1923-2006) just managed to escape the Nazi occupation and emigrated to Australia, where he became the leading pioneer of modernism and introduced the Bauhaus vocabulary.

Seidler's oeuvre was influenced by his four mentors: Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Josef Albers and Oscar Niemeyer. The teachings of Gropius in particular gave him great inspiration. He felt that his designs could not be summed up by names like modernism or international style.

To Seidler, modernism is not about a style, but about an approach to architecture that is different in other regions and other climates. His oeuvre evolved according to three main elements: social relevance, building as efficiently as possible using new techniques and inventive applications of concrete, and
visual aesthetics through the public squares he introduced into the urban landscape with art. The oeuvre he left behind is extremely wide-ranging and his ideas still greatly influence Australian architects today.
